Different Types of Cataracts

One of the leading causes of blindness is cataracts. When the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, the result is vision loss, as light cannot travel well through the clouded lens. While most individuals tend to lump the term “cataracts” into one category, there are actually three primary types of cataracts. People can develop one or a combination of any of the three types of cataracts. Though cataracts may not be immediately evident, they can worsen if left untreated.

Most cataract doctors recommend having your eyes checked regularly, as early treatment can provide the best results that can save your vision. Here are the three common types of cataracts:

Nuclear Sclerotic Cataracts

The most common age-related type of cataracts, this type is indicated by a marked yellowing and hardening of the lens (hence the term “sclerosis”) and a gradual clouding of the central area of the lens, also know as the nucleus.

Nuclear sclerotic cataracts progress at a gradual pace. At first, individuals will notice specific changes in the affected eye. Some patients even report noticing a temporary improvement in close-up vision – this occurrence, called “second sight” is only a temporary phased that will eventually worsen. Someone afflicted with nuclear sclerotic cataracts may also have difficulty focusing with the affected eye.

Cortical Cataracts

As alluded to in the name, Cortical cataracts affects the lens’ cortex – the peripheral edge of the lens. There is often cloudy opacities in the cortex, and the change in the lens fiber water content will create clefts and fissures, causing light that enters the eye to scatter. Without proper lighting, individuals with this condition often suffer from glare, blurred vision and poor depth perception.

Posterior Subscapular Cataract

This kind of cataract often starts as a cloudy or opaque area found in the back surface of the lens, forming beneath the lens capsule. When this happens, it creates a “halo effect” where the afflicted individual will start to see glares around lights. This can cause difficulty reading and other issues with vision. This is a particularly aggressive form of cataract, often causing a noticeable difference in just a matter of months. Individuals particularly at risk include those who have diabetes, take steroids, and suffer from extreme nearsightedness.

Cataracts are a common condition that is commonly associated with the aging process; however, a variety of other factors such as genetics, medications, trauma and histories of skin disease can also contribute to cataract formation. Though vision loss is the most common problem that can develop from cataracts, cataracts can be treated especially if they are discovered early.
